About the Exhibition
Texas Art House is pleased to present Winston Lee Mascarenhas in a solo exhibition LIFE FORCES: kinetic rhythms August 18 through September 23.
As a visual artist, an amateur musician, and a retired physician I am captivated and in awe of the world around me, whether it be the curve or line of a shadow, the rhythmic hum of the wind, the colors of nature, a simple melody, the heart beat of someone close, or even a temporary monument made from a simple stack of boxes.
We all carry within our heads/brains invisible frames of reference that filter our experience and shape the way we see the world around us. Those frames are the product of many things – our cultural experience, our education, our assumptions, our relationships, and our innate biology. Multi referenced and influenced, irrational at times, my frames are more centered by the senses and my art has become the physical manifestations or examinations of those senses.
For this recent body of work “LIFE FORCES: Kinetic Rhythms” my inspirations were multifold. Corrugated cardboard and burlap sacks (Coffee Bean bags) are materials ubiquitous in our commercial society, utilitarian in purpose, containers for our consumer goods, but easily cast away disposable detritus of our daily lives. The conversations raised with the use of these materials are numerous and important discussions. Robert Rauschenberg’s frequent use of found, discarded objects, and especially the use of cardboard as “art” materials in the development of many of his works intrigued me. RR when speaking about his cardboard series, referred to it as, “a material of waste and softness,” referencing both its functions as a temporary container for more valuable things and its organic sculptural potential.
Another important reference is the music of composer Philip Glass. As an iconic representative of the Minimal Classical genre, he masterfully manipulates the use of repetitive melodies and superimposed repetitive melodies into pure, eloquent, and powerful compositions. The recent release of the orchestrated “Life: A Journey Through Time”, showcases the kinetic rhythms and wonders of the natural world.
My frames of reference are manifested in this new body of work with an deep rooted sense of the Life Force and it’s rhythms. A quiet calming movement ever present, there is a sense of the elements of nature in the constructs formed of wood, fiber, and beeswax – stimulus for a contemplative visual experience and encouraging conversations of contemporary social and eco-political concerns.
It is important to me that not only the finished work but the process be a part of the viewer’s experience. While the final product can be reduced to its parts (corrugated cardboard from trees, burlap rough cloth made from jute or hemp fibers, natural pigments, and beeswax produced by honey bees), there is a complexity both in the making and in the final outcome. The rough texture of the material unexpectedly melds with the satin-finish of the painted and natural beeswax creating a calm organic elegance. Forms on the wall that appear to be reductive minimalist blocks, tubes, or columns at a distance are revealed to be invitations to worlds within the folds lapped by painted markings of smooth wax, extravagant and sensuous-an invitation to the beauty of Life’s forces and it’s kinetic rhythms.
